I remember the moment like it was yesterday—sitting with my first round of student data, staring at the numbers, and feeling my heart sink.

“My students can’t read because I don’t know how to teach reading.”

That realization hit me hard. But it also lit a fire in me. I made a commitment right then and there: to spend the rest of my career learning everything I could about how children learn to read—and how to teach it effectively.

And guess what? After diving deep into the science of reading and refining my practice, something incredible happened. For 10 years straight, my first-grade team and I had 91.5% of our students reading on or above grade level.

But my journey didn’t stop there.

When I became a principal and executive director, I realized that for schools to see real, lasting results, it wasn’t enough for just the teachers to “get it.” The leaders had to know how to lead Tier 1 instruction with confidence and clarity. So, I rolled up my sleeves. I modeled powerful whole-group instruction right in classrooms. I dug into the data with teachers and principals, guiding them step-by-step through Tier 1 transformation. And you know what? It worked.

But even then, I knew I wasn’t done.
